Maciejowski Bible - 1260s female clothing
The Maciejowski Bible is an incredible resource for medieval enthusiasts - the entire collection of images can be found online in great detail. I have included here one smaller image to tempt you into the background to my current project.
The manuscript itself was created around 1250 in Paris before it began its long travels around Europe. The images illustrate key points in the Hebrew Bible and show people in contemporary, that is 13th century, dress.
The main points to note in women's clothing are the extravagant drape and length of apparently simple cotes, the open 'under-arm' seams which allow them to be tied back for work (see the image of Ruth in folio 18) and very pretty striped stockings.
